It is so important to explicitly teach students the words on your writing rubrics and checklists. We must also provide lots of examples with mentor texts. I find myself using the following words quite frequently during my narrative unit and create mini lessons specifically to teach these terms:

  1. Lead
  2. Conflict
  3. Climax
  4. Resolution
  5. Rising Action
  6. Plot
  7. Point of View
  8. Character
  9. Inner Thinking
  10. Dialogue
  11. Elaboration
  12. Sensory Details
  13. Anecdote
  14. Theme
  15. Mood
  16. Tone
  17. Figurative Language
  18. Author’s Message
  19. Author’s Purpose
  20. Audience
